Let's Have An Adventure!

Wednesday, April 23, 2014

Hello lovely people! We had a sweet little event a few weeks ago at the gorgeous Silverbrook Farm Bed & Breakfast in Hillsboro, VA with the cute couples looking to book their weddings and parties there. First off, the location is amazing. Green hills all around, flowers blooming, it was gorgeous. The best way to describe the house is 'homey'. You immediately feel the love from Dot(the owner) and are surrounded by years of sweet memories, it's wonderful. The barn on the property is fantastic-used for weddings and receptions, as well as all other events. It really is ideal in every way, and we hope to be back soon to cater events!
Now, on to what we added to the fun event! Some of our tried and true favorite like Lemon Cake Bites and Sugar Cookies, as well as some new surprises. We're starting to branch out a bit and we hope you like that additional treat options!

Dear Mr. Watterson

Sunday, March 9, 2014

(This post is filled with love, new friends, a ton of info, and lots of cookies!)

If you're lucky, there are a few times in life where something completely pure and wonderful finds its way into your heart. For me, the strongest example of that is Calvin & Hobbes. When my Mom had a night out with friends or church responsibilities, my sister and I always knew how dinner would go with my Dad. It was usually basic(which we were completely happy with), but the best part was being able to read while we ate. We'd each pick out a Calvin & Hobbes book from our small collection and spend the meal sitting together at the table, randomly sharing the strips that broke the silence with our laughter. Absolutely fantastic dinners that have remained so clear in my mind.
As adults now, my husband and I have started our own small collection of these books, and I'm happy to see that without a push from us, our son enjoys them too.

A few months ago I found out about a documentary that had been made revolving around the creator of Calvin and Hobbes, Bill Watterson. If you have a few minutes, take a quick peek at the brilliance that is Dear Mr. Watterson.
I contacted Joel(the director) about wanting to lend a little bit of our cookie magic the next time there was a local screening. He was excited about the idea and after a few months and emails back and forth, we decided on the DC screening at the Artisphere being put together by Jared with Play Back The Tape. We got confirmation the day before the event and started scrambling to put together some amazing Calvin & Hobbes themed cookies to raffle off to the lovely attendees. This is what we created!
So what do you think? Pretty cute huh? I stuck to the black and white Cookies and Wendy worked her artistic magic on those painted beauties. The largest Calvin & Hobbes Cookie was a 12" square, and the rest were 6" rectangles. Smaller scale compared to other fun projects we've taken on, but again this was all for fun so we wanted to make as many as possible for the sold out screening.
There were some bonus surprises to the night other than our small contribution. We Were Pirates performed some of their songs-they created the score for the film, and Nevin Martell and Mike Boggs were part of a Q&A after the screening. We met Nevin for the first time last night and I'm hooked. His website is all about culture and food, he writes for outlets like the Washington Post and the Travel channel, and with 5 books published (and another out in a few months), I'm officially in awe. One of his books titled Looking for Calvin and Hobbes: The Unconventional Story of Bill Watterson and his Revolutionary Comic Strip is now on my to-buy book list. Full of information from 125 interviews, over a year of research, as well as his own personal perspective, this book is all about the life and career of the incredible mind behind Calvin & Hobbes. Again, I'll be reading this very very soon.

All in all, it was a fantastic night. The music was wonderful, the documentary was inspiring, and the Q&A left me wanting to know more about Mr. Watterson and his 'simple' comic strip that still means so much to me.
Thank You to all of the people that made this night so special

And to Joanna with Clover Creek Photography for making our Cookies look so darn good!
